Framing

Concept: When narcissists wish for others to serve their needs, they often choose to word the context in a way that makes it appear as if they intend to serve a more benevolent cause.

How this leads to greater control over a victim: Creating a frame around a request for action that makes it appear as if the move would help the actor or others increases the chance of occurrence.

Examples:

  1. A co-worker convinced a writer to take his name off a report he wrote because a board member doesn’t like the writer and may refuse to authorize a plan. The co-worker proceeds to present and takes full credit for the report.
  2. Felix convinces his significant other to donate toys to kids in a charitable program at his workplace, where he gets an award for bringing in the highest return.
  3. An adult child who gambles his money away convinces his parents to pay his mortgage because they would save their grandchildren from going homeless.

Advice: If you’ve picked up on other signs of narcissism, apply a heavy dose of skepticism when the possible narcissist claims that you should take action to support yourself or someone else.
